October: Musical Awareness

October--air is getting cooler, leaves are changing, pumpkin decorations--and dance classes are back in full swing!

This month we will be focusing on Musical Awareness.   Be sure to ask and talk with your little dancers about what they are learning in dance class.

 Dancers will be:

 • Learning to find the beat of the music • Counting out loud along with the teacher and then on own • Echo Game – repeating a simple rhythm • Listening to and recognizing different tempos, styles, and qualities within music • Finding count 1 • Matching movement to music • Learning about musical accents and rhythmic patterns

• Movement Concepts – Dancers will explore the many different ways their bodies can move while also learning about the following concepts:

• Speed – movement that is slow, medium, or fast • Level – movement or positions that are high, middle, or low • Direction – movement that is forward, backward, moving right, moving left upward, and downward

Family Nutcracker: Saturday December 15

One of my dreams for Simple Gifts Dance is soon to be realized--our very own production of the Nutcracker!

Image result for brief synopsis of nutcracker ballet

The Nutcracker is a classical ballet in two acts. It is based on E.T.A. Hoffmann's 1816 fairy tale The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. It tells the story of a little girl who goes to the Land of Sweets on Christmas Eve. Ivan Vsevolozhsky and Marius Petipa adapted Hoffmann's story for the ballet.

All students are invited to participate, but not required.  This is going to be a fun opportunity for each dancer! Performances are scheduled for Saturday, December 15 at 2 pm and 6:30 pm at the Star Theater in Upper Sandusky.

To participate dancers will need to:

1. return the participation form no later than Oct 13

2. pay the $40 fee: which covers the rental fee for each costume, the foundation pieces for the costume.

3. attend all mandatory rehearsals and performances

We will be holding auditions for the principle roles of Clara, the Nutcracker and various other roles.  Dancers invited to audition must be enrolled in the Monday intermediate class or Wednesday Advanced/Prepointe class.

We will also be seeking Adults and Male dancers for various roles, as well as parent volunteers for tasks before and during the performances.

Forms will be distributed at classes the first week in October, you may download yours here!
